Community services are for all Canberrans
Nearly every Canberran uses community services each year, often without even realising it. This week, you or someone you know will likely access one of these essential services.
The ACT community sector provides crucial support to everyone, including:
- children, young people, and families
- older people
- people with mental health challenges
- people facing alcohol and drug issues
- survivors of domestic and family violence
- healthcare consumers
- multicultural, migrant, and refugee
- people with disabilities; and
- carers and volunteers.
These services not only enhance the quality of life for individuals but also build a stronger, more inclusive ACT community.
The community sector is in crisis
The ACT community sector is facing a crisis, with some organisations at risk of closing their doors within the next 12 months. This crisis stems from the government’s failure to partner effectively with the community sector and to increase funding in line with population growth, the cost-of-living crisis, and the rising demand for services.
As a result, community organisations are:
- struggling to be available when people need them
- delivering services from unsafe or unsuitable locations; and
- lacking financial reserves to respond to community and climate emergencies.
Why this campaign matters
Increased funding for community services means better support for those in need, stronger social connections, and a healthier, more resilient ACT community. It ensures that the community sector can continue to offer programs that support priority populations and be there for everyone when needed.

The ACT Community Sector Peaks and ACT community organisations are united in advocating for a thriving and sustainable community sector accessible to all Canberrans. As we approach the 2024 election and beyond, we are calling on the ACT Government to:
- ensure the quality of life for all Canberrans by sustainably funding the community sector that supports them
- guarantee that both recent and long-term residents have access to necessary support
- provide suitable, safe spaces for Canberrans to receive the help they need
- protect the community from the impacts of climate change
